G.D. Vajra is a producer of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level in Piedmont, Italy. It is being run by Giuseppe, Isidoro and Francesca Vaira, lovingly overseen by father Aldo and mother Milena. It was Aldo that founded G.D. Vajra, kicking off with a counter-cultural twist by returning to his ancestors’ land in the early ‘70s, when all else were deserting the countryside in droves. That spirit of tradition with an adaptive streak characterises this far-sighted outfit. Indeed, Aldo’s decision to embrace the rogue ‘j’ on the label – a print error that happens to hark back to the pre-1920s spelling of the family name – says a lot about the clan’s capacity to roll with it and nimbly fuse its roots with the future. Over the years they’ve acquired coveted holdings in their home commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga. The 'Ravera' is Giuseppe Vaira's most powerful expression and will last decades.

About the wine

Tasting notes

Focused, intense and vibrant aromas of dried rose, cherry, blood orange, mint, menthol and savoury spice. in the mouth it's very firm, dry and tightly bound with flavours of red cherry, strawberry and licorice, brightened with fresh acidity and textured by muscular tannins. Although quite austere in its youth, this will soften and loosen its grip with years under its belt.

The Grape

Nebbiolo

Often referred to as the king of red grapes, Nebbiolo is responsible for some of the greatest wines in the world. The regions of Barbaresco and Barolo, in Piedmont, Italy, create the most revered expressions of the variety and have set the benchmarks for the world over. Nebbiolo is quite light in colour, dry and delicate but packs a punch in aroma and flavour with notes of rose, tar, cherry, red berries, blood orange, licorice, leather, terracotta and earthy herbals. These wines have high acidity and high tannins, making them extremely age worthy that deepen in complexity over decades. Simply stunning wines!
